CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

LIZ

Liz looked across the basement to James, who hadn’t moved much from his position near the small barred windows. He appeared to be waiting for something, but she couldn’t figure what. She had had a horrible thought that he had friends, if that were possible. Maybe more serial killers. But she knew that wasn’t the case. He was a lone loser. If there’s one thing she knew about James, it was that.

When he came back, when Freya wasn’t looking, he patted Liz down, just as she expected and he found… nothing. But she also hadn’t had a chance to go back to the hiding spot and retrieve what she had found in the kitchen, and she was going to need to soon, as it smelled like Freya had almost finished making dinner.

The old lady looked at James. “It won’t be long, dear. Do you mind if it’s a bit tomato tasting? I put in a tin. It was all I had to go with the potatoes.”

He looked back at her with a smile. “It smells great, Mrs Havercroft. Actually…” He pulled himself away from the windows, walked around the piles of furniture and moved near the longer table, which had become the makeshift cooking counter.

“Yes, dear?”

Liz watched him move closer to Freya, and it was all she could do to stop her skin from crawling. He knew Liz was watching, and she knew it brought him joy. He could kill the old lady at any moment, and Liz would have to watch him do it and not be able to stop him.

She couldn’t remember a human being she hated more than in that moment as he placed both of his hands on Freya’s shoulders.

“How would you like to come and live with us? Earlier I went to my parents’ house. It’s still standing, as it was when I left it, and it’s full of food with plenty of space for all of us.” He looked at Liz then back to Freya, who looked a bit bemused. “There’s more than enough room. In fact, there are too many rooms!”

Freya smiled. “Oh, um,” she looked at Liz. “Would you be okay with that? I don’t want to be a burden.”

Liz’s smiling mask remained fixed to her face. She nodded, unable to quite find any words to back up her expression.

James continued, his arm around the shoulders of Freya, both of them facing Liz. “We can create a new family!”

“I think that would be good for all of us,” said Liz, finding her voice.

Freya’s smile faltered. “Well, if both of you don’t mind. I would love to… Are you sure it’s safe there?”

“It has a high wall around the whole property, and an electronic gate, which still works.”

She glanced at the pot on the stove. “When do you want to go there?”

Liz stood. “After dinner. Let’s get some of that stew inside us first. And then maybe we can help you pack some things up?”

James finally removed his arm from Freya’s shoulders and clapped.
